Quang Tri is a coastal province in North Central Vietnam with a natural area of about 4,740 km² and has a population of 620,410 as of 2015.
Quang Tri Province lies on the geographical coordinates from 16º18 to 17º10 North latitude, 106º32 to 107º34 East longitude, 598km north of Hanoi. North borders the district of Le Thuy, Quang Binh Province. The South borders the district of Phong Dien and A Luoi, Thua Thien Hue Province. East bordering the East Sea. The West borders on Savannakhet and Salavan, Lao PDR.
Quang Tri Province Topography and Geomorphology
The area of Quang Tri is not large, but the terrain is very diverse, sloping from West to East, forming four natural geographical areas: sea, plain, midland and mountain. Mountainous areas account for 67% of the total natural land area of the province; the midland occupies 22% of the total natural land area of the province, while the lowland area accounts for 11% of the total natural land area of the province. The highest point is Voi Mep which is 1,701m high, the lowest point along the delta plain with an absolute height of 25-50m; the average altitude is in the midland hill with the absolute height of 50 - 100m above sea level.
Quang Tri’s climate is characterized by humid tropical climate and great influence of the East Sea. The rainy season occurs from September to January yearly, the rainfall accounts for 75 - 85% of the total rainfall throughout the year; Heavy rainy months are September and November; in the hot season, rainfall rarely lasts from February to July. In general, the total rainfall in the province ranges from 2000 to 2.800mm, the number of rainy days in the year varies from 140 days to 180 days. Total average hours of sunshine in Quang Tri range from 1,800 to 1,900 hours, which is higher than in the Northern provinces. The highest average annual temperature is 29ºC in the plain, 25-26ºC in the high mountains and hills; The coldest in December to January yearly.
Quang Tri Province has a total natural land area of 473,982ha. Of which, the agricultural land area is 381,008 ha, accounting for 80.38%; Non-agricultural land is 39,144ha, accounting for 8.26%; Unused land is 53,829ha, accounting for 11.36%.
In 2015, the province has 242,240ha of forested land, including 141,499ha of natural forest and 100,741ha of planted forest. In general, plantation forest is of good quality, with the largest FSC certified forest area in the whole country. Plantation forests are mainly composed of A. auriculiformis, A. mangium, Acacia hybrid. It is cultivated and has intensive factor so high economic efficiency; Attention has been paid to the introduction of new forest trees into production forests;
Marine and Coastal Resources
Quang Tri has a 75km coastline with two important Cua Viet and Cua Tung estuaries. The exclusive economic zone of 8,400km², a large fishing ground, is rich in high-value seafood such as lobster, cuttlefish, crabs, sea cucumbers, algae and some fish and coral species.
Offshore about 14 nautical miles is Con Co island, which has an important economic and defense location, is currently building fishing port and logistic service area of Con Co fishery to serve vessels in the province and Province in the region. In the province, there are 03 main river systems to the sea: Ben Hai, Thach Han and O Lau. The widespread distribution of these rivers is the main source of surface water for production and living. These rivers have a large flow of water in the rainy season. In less rainy years the small tributaries and streams are often depleted causing drought.
Groundwater in sedimentary and weathering layers develop low mountainous terrain along the river. This is an important source of water for production and living. Water in the red soil layer is weathered from basalt with good quality according to chemical criteria... This source of water is very valuable to people in mountainous areas. Current forms of exploitation are mainly small household-sized digging wells.
Quang Tri has relatively rich mineral resources. By the end of 1995, the Province had recorded 48 mines and ore occurrences, 17 of which belonged to metallic group, 22 belonged to construction materials.
Limestone mines and materials for cement production stretched in the direction of North West - Southeast, the reserves reached about 3.5 billion tons. Mineral titanium distributed along Vinh Thai - Vinh Kim coast with a reserve of 1 million tons. Besides, the province also has many precious minerals such as gold, anthracite; Mineral water and sand relatively large ... are great advantages for Quang Tri industry.
Population & Work Force
In 2015, the Province's population is 620,410 people. The urban population is 181,165 people, accounting for 29.2%. The natural population growth rate is approximately 0.5% between 2010 and 2015; the mechanical population increased slightly.
In the structure of population by sex, females make up 50.7%, males account for 49.3%; By age group, about 90.9% is from 0 to 59 years old, this indicator shows that this is a young population structure, the population under 15 years old accounted for 37.9%, this is the reserve workforce. Abundant in the Province.
In 2015, the province has 349,719 people of working age, accounting for 57.5% of the population, the number of people in working age increase annually about 3,000 - 4,000 people. The trained and professional staffs of the province are limited. The number of people qualified from elementary level, vocational certificates is up to 26% (in which college, university or higher accounting for 4.4%, professional secondary school 5.9%, technical workers with diploma 1.5%, technical workers without diploma 8.3%, elementary/vocational certificate 2.9%). The vast majority of non-technical workers account for 74%. The majority of workers in the province work in agriculture, forestry and fishery; Labour in the industrial-construction and service sectors tends to occupy an increasing share of the labour force.
